Knowing the species

The pirarara (Phractocephalus hemioliopterus) is a freshwater leather fish, born in the Amazon and Araguaia-Tocantins basins. Because it is large, it has a head with strong bones and has a bone plate located in the anterior part of the dorsal fin.

The belly and flanks have a yellowish coloration. The back varies between brown and black, and may contain greenish hues. As an adult, it reaches 1.50 meters in length and weighs more than 50 kilos. It is highly sought after in sport fishing, as it offers a high level of resistance in capture, which makes the experience very attractive for those who like challenges.

Their reproduction takes place in periods of flood, once a year, with a reproductive migration, in which they move from the feeding place to the place where they perform sow. In food, it is an omnivore, that is, eats various foods, from fruits to birds and crabs. It can also feed on animals that have already died and decomcomposition fish. In relation to life expectancy, you can live more than 20 years.

According to fossil records discovered by paleontologists, the pirarara has existed in South America for more than nine million years. Another curiosity is that the barbilhões of pirarara emit a very loud sound, which begins in a serious tone and is ending in a high tone. This sound is emitted by the passage of air from the oral cavity through its operculums.

Where can I find it?

Pirarara is a very versatile freshwater fish in terms of location. It is found throughout the northern region of the country, as well as in part of the Midwest region, which covers the Araguaia-Tocantis and Amazon basins. The Canton Fishing Resort, the best fishing resort in Brazil, is located right on the banks of the Araguaia River, a place that provides fishing not only for pirararas, but of gigantic piraaíbas as well.

You need to know

The pirarara has a habit of basking in the sun, so as to remain close to the area of the river surface during the period of the day. In some rivers, such as javaés (smaller arm of the Araguaia River – bathes the states of Goiás and Tocantins) pirarara has the habit of exposing the dorsal fin out of water, which facilitates to be found in fisheries, mainly sports.

Pirarara fishing, helpful tips

Because it is an omnivorous fish, the most advisable is to use natural baits, because they attract the fish not only by appearance, but also by smell and taste. The best choices are the small whole fish, such as tilapia and lambari.

Another option is to use only a part of these animals, such as the head, gill, leather or fillet. However, it is also possible to use artificial baits if the fish are in shallow water, but are considered less efficient.

More bait alternatives:

·         Tuvira;

·         Pyroamboia;

·         Tilapia gut;

·         Boiled egg.

pirarara fishing

As it is a large and heavy species, it is necessary to use resistant materials. Examples: lines ranging from 30 to 50 pounds and hooks between 8/0 to 10/0, because of its large mouth. Regardless of whether you fish with reel or reel, choose a profile model between medium and low, with large reel capacity. The lines should be between 0.50 and 0.70 mm.

An important tip to put the bait on the hook, is to leave the hook on display, as easy as possible to make the movement of the hook. Because it’s a fish that swallows by suction, the pirarara won’t see the hook out of the bait, and when it feels, the hook will already be piercing her mouth. Now, if the fisherman hides the hook with the bait, it may be that she feels the hook before the fisherman and spits the bait back.

In addition, it is recommended that pirarara fishing occurs in places near structures that are submerged, such as quarries or antlers, being the best time from May to October, when rivers are in their normal bed.

A snag who’s no joke

Whether on the edge of the fishing grounds or in bottom lakes, whenever you need to make a pitch at better distances, it is interesting to use lead, which is a weight equipment used in conjunction with the bait and hook to increase its sinking rate, anchoring capacity and/or throwing distance.

The sinker needs to run on the line, having its weight varying with the depth of the fishing or river. So you can keep the bait close to the time the pirarara attacks. It is not necessary to make a complex system, however, choose a sinker that anchors well in the place where you fish.

Tip: Use sinker between 60 to 100g of round or olive type.

At the time of the hook

As the pyromaces have the habit of accommodating the bait in the mouth before swallowing, it is recommended to let it load the line a little before performing a vigorous hook.

With regard to the type of hook, prefer to use those of circular model (circle hook) in size not too large, which in addition to being more camouflaged in the bait, presents a lower risk of injuring the fish, if it is a chick.

Finally, pirarara fishing requires a lot of care from the fisherman and calls for more robust equipment and a greater effort when taking the fish out of the water. But, it does not require a considerable effort in vain, because the fish yields great fights and great photos.

Don’t forget: be willing and in good physical shape as you embark on this adventure! That fish will probably take you to the limit. Be well rested, with health in order and always try to be accompanied.
